Reflections

  • Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations.

When it comes to rhetorical elements and analysis I had learned about rhetorical elements in my junior year of high school but, ever since I feel like I didn’t really use them in my senior year so, so it had been a while and I didn’t remember much of what I learned. However, now after taking this class, I feel that I have become much better at identifying rhetorical elements and how and where to use genres in my writing. Since we focused a lot on the rhetorical elements I feel that these rhetorical elements can help us identify if the writing we are reading is credible, why was it written and what is the author trying to tell us, the audience.

  • Understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences

Before taking this class, I don’t think I ever created any genre compositions at the very least I didn’t know why I was making it, because in high school teachers mostly just assign you things and tell you, to get it done before this date. However, in this class, I have learned that authors use many genres and they use them purposefully to target a specific audience, or whatever genre they use is the best or most efficient way to promote their agenda. For example, if a singer wants to promote their songs, they would choose social media, especially TikTok or Instagram reels because hundreds of millions of people use both platforms and they like short videos with people dancing or acting silly.

  • Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias.

I think I have always dealt with sources since I freshman in high school, and although they are strict on citations, which is reasonable, they don’t really care as much about where you get the information from. I think one of the reasons may be the fact that they don’t catch as many people plagiarizing in high school as it’s done in college. After my first semester, it was fairly clear that I needed credible sources to back up my claims and statements, however, It was much easier and clearer in this class with the library database, since most or all source of information is credible there because it’s used by a university. However, it’s important that I choose the right articles by already knowing what type of information I am looking for and what genre such as magazine, journal, and what am I trying to answer i.e my topic questions.
